Day 1 – Road Trip to St. Pete’s

Looking back to Victoria

Looking back to Victoria

Today we left Victoria B.C. on the 11 a.m. ferry to return to our former homes in Ladner B.C.  It was a rather uneventful ferry ride that I have taken many times through the Gulf Islands but this time I felt sad to be leaving the majestic West Coast for our new adventures in Florida.  As I was taking photos through Active Pass I noticed leaving the dark skies of Victoria to the sunny skies toward Vancouver.   I took this as a sign that it was indeed our time to leave the Island and head toward the sunshine.

But for my kind family and friends in Colwood that so graciously let me stay in your home for the past 3 months, please do not take this as anything against Island life or your comfortable home.  As our stay came to an end in Colwood,  we both felt that this part of the world would be a wonderful place to retire (except for the winters and the rain LOL !)

After returning the Volvo to Ladner, picking up the mail, starting the sailboat, saying good-bye to friends and letting Lucy play with Maggie for awhile, we finally headed for the Blaine border crossing around 2:15pm.  We encountered a long line up at the border, but once again our nexus cards saved the day and we sailed through the border in a few minutes and began our first leg of our US cross country journey.

Traffic was heavy through most of the Bellingham and Seattle area probably due to the start and end of various ‘spring breaks’, until we entered the mountains near Chinook Pass.  We stopped at Ellensburg, Washington for our supper break at Morelli’s where we had a delicious pasta dinner.  Feeling refreshed and having a late start out of BC,  we decided to continued on to Pasco, Washington where we stopped for the night.  Total driving distance 620 km.  We stayed at the newly refurbished Sleep Inn just off the highway, which was very comfortable and it included a hot breakfast of eggs, sausages and waffles for $105.  and $15 for Miss Lucy.  (pet friendly)

Due to hosting problems, my website was removed from the web in error,  so I wasn’t able to post this blog on the first night.  Everything has been restored but now I am encountering problems with my Galaxy Note and so I won’t be able to add any pictures to my blog until I find out what’s wrong (and I have been taking a lot of pictures).

This morning March 25th, I am attempting to post my 2 days of travels and hopefully be able to add the pictures later tonight or tomorrow.
